VOL. CL V • May 2006
GOOD NEWS! GREAT NEWS!
On behalf of the Vestry it gives great pleasure to announce that St. Andrew's debt of $550,000 borrowed to build, has been paid off in its entirety. We are debt-free! The month of May will honor this joy as we give thanks to the Lord. And how appropriate that this should come at Easter when we celebrate the joy of the greatest act of love ever to forgive our sins ("forgive us our debts").
Our heartfelt thanks to all who sacrificed of their time, talents and treasure for the Lord's work in making this possible. From the widow's mite to the child's coin earned as allowance to faithful pledges over several years: all have contributed out of the abundance of God's love. A special note of thanks, too, to those whose generous bequests made the final payments possible: the late Shirley ("Lee") Doran, Dave Doran and Martin Kellogg. Our children and future generations will be beneficiaries of such blessings.
Join us as we "Burn the Note" of indebtedness at the Parish Picnic at St. Andrew's on Sunday, May 21 at Noon . Bring a covered dish item to share at the picnic. Hamburgers, and hotdogs, and drinks will be provided. The picnic is for all ages, come and enjoy! PARSON'S PARAGRAPH
I am partial to John's Gospel. John's Gospel is all about believing. It highlights the premise that being a Christian is living by faith in Christ Jesus: "the assurance of things hoped for and the conviction of things yet unseen." (Hebrews 11:1) Take, for example, the story of Thomas we read at Easter. The Church has a lot of "Thomases." We (the Church) profess to have faith but more like Thomas, we understand the words: "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe." (John 20:25). Jesus said to Thomas, "Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe." (John 20:29) [BACK TO TOP]
As we recall Easter's joy that Christ is Risen, the Good News is that God continues to do signs and wonders right before our eyes. Take, for example, the wonderful news that St. Andrew's is debt-free. This is no small thing; just two months ago, we owed more than a half million dollars ($550,000) on the new building. The $2 million expense was daunting, even though we raised $1.4 million and received some gifts. No one knew for a fact when or how this would be repaid, but we knew by faith that God was calling us. Bruce Wilkinson (The Prayer of Jabez) caught my attention when he wrote, " we are expected to attempt something large enough that failure is guaranteed unless God steps in ."
Well, my friends, God has done just that. God has again stepped into our lives and provided as we trusted in faith. From the Hymnal we sing: "How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in his excellent word! What more can he say than to you he hath said, to you that for refuge to Jesus have fled?" (#637)
A blessed Easter season!

NEW ALCOHOL POLICY APPROVED FOR ST. ANDREW'S HALL
(APPROVED BY VESTRY April 11, 2006)
The use of wine at the Holy Eucharist is one of two sacramental elements we take in remembrance of our Lord Jesus Christ. Wine was also a part of the celebration and first miracle recorded of our Lord at a wedding in Cana of Galilee. Therefore, we honor the proper use of alcohol and expect that all who use these facilities will respect its use.
Alcohol may be served U only U in the U St. Andrew's Hall U by the glass in the form of wine or champagne. No open bar, beer or mixed drinks are allowed. No alcohol may be taken from the St. Andrew's Hall.
If alcohol is served, another equally attractive, non-alcoholic drink must be available.
Our primary concern is that the safety of all is encouraged:
No alcohol may be served to intoxicate or to anyone who is intoxicated
Those serving and being served must be of legal age to consume alcohol
The event host (wedding party, etc.) is responsible for the proper use of alcohol and, in its use, for all property and safety of others
Any license required by the town of Nags Head, Dare County and/or State or Federal requirements is the responsibility of the event host and must be posted with the church office in advance.
Every request for use of alcohol must come before the Rector and one of the Church Wardens.
VISION COMMITTEE
The Vestry has appointed a Vision Committee to study the "state of the parish" and the plans for the future of the parish. Harriett Workman and Skipper Hines have agreed to share the Chair of the Committee. Other Committee members are Shawn Nunemaker, George Embry, Tish Leonard, Elizabeth Robbins, Pat Fearing, Deb Taylor, Helen Woolard, Matt Northrup, and Steve Sawin. Fr. Ted Bishop will be their Consultant. They will be meeting twice a month for the next several months. We thank them for their commitment of time and talent.
BAPTISMS AND FIRST COMMUNIONS
Holy Baptism is offered at services of worship throughout the year. Whenever possible it is hoped that Baptisms can be planned for specific days of significance, such as at Pentecost. The upcoming days are particularly well sited for planning a Baptism: Sundays in Easter (Sundays in May), Pentecost Sunday (June 4) and Virginia Dare Sunday, August 20.
Children who have been Baptized and who are wanting to received Holy Communion: their parents/guardians should contact the rector and ask for a time to prepare both child and parents for the child's First Communion.
CONFIRMATION CLASSES
Those youth who are nearly teens or who are teens are welcomed to plan for Confirmation when the Bishop makes his visit to St. Andrew's on September 24. Confirmation Classes will be held June - July at the Sunday School hour. If you would like to be a part of this class, please let the rector know by calling the parish administrator, Sandy George at 441-5382. A book for Confirmation and instruction will be provided for all being prepared. Confirmation Classes will run from June 4 - July 30 from 10:15-10:55 in the upstairs Classroom B.

FOOD BANK OF THE ALBEMARLE
In our 15 county service region, approximately 16.3% of the men, women, and children live at or below the poverty level. Many more are food insecure due to illness or death in the family, wages below the North Carolina living income standard, loss of a job, or one of many other family catastrophes. During Spring and early Summer of each year, we participate in two major events that are critical to our ability to serve the hungry and needy in our region. The events are the U Letter Carriers Food Drive U and U Dine Out to Help Out.
The Letter Carriers Food Drive will be held on May 13, 2006. Last year, letter carriers collected over 27,000 pounds of shelf-stable food that members of churches and citizens in our communities donated for them to pick up. The food collected within each community goes to an agency in that community. To make this year's food drive even more successful, we need your help to advertise the event in your church bulletin and in you announcements to encourage your congregation members to participate.
Likewise, our Dine Out to Help Out will be held on June 6, 2006 in conjunction with National Hunger Awareness Day. Last year, 37 restaurants donated 10% of their income, for the day, to help the hungry and needy in our region. Each dollar donated enables us to provide approximately six pounds of food. Success of Dine Out depends on two things - restaurant participation and individuals willing to enjoy a great meal out knowing that 10% of their bill will help individuals in our communities. It is a win-win for everyone! Again, we need your help to make Dine Out a success.
We know that none of us can solve the problem of food insecurity in our region by our self and investments in the hungry and needy in our communities pay handsome dividends. We need your help to ask as many people as possible to take a step and make a contribution to making the life a little easier for the hungry men, women, and children we see every day.
Thank you. If you have questions about the Letter Carriers Food Drive, please call Hope Weitzel at 252-335-4035, Ext. 17. For questions about Dine Out to Help Out, please contact John McLaughlin at Ext. 20.

WESTMINSTER CONCERT BELL CHOIR
Hailed throughout the nation for its virtuosity, the WESTMINSTER CONCERT BELL CHOIR is composed of students at Westminster Choir College of Rider University in Princeton, New Jersey. Under the baton of its director Kathleen Ebling-Thorne, this dynamic ensemble performs with the largest range of handbells in the world - 8 octaves, from C1 to C9. Many of the bells are made of bronze and range in weight from four ounces to eleven pounds. The choir also uses the large "Basso Profundo" aluminum-cast bells that are a new phenomenon in handbell ringing. Members also supplement their handbells with a six-octave set of Malmark Choirchime® instruments from C2 to C8 - the widest range in existence.
The Westminster Concert Bell Choir has appeared on Public Television's "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" and several broadcasts of the "Today" show, including one in which the ensemble was joined by NBC television personalities Katie Couric and Willard Scott. Its holiday performances have been heard annually on National Public Radios "Performance Today," and it is included on NPR's "Christmas Around the Country II" recording. The Choir has performed at Carnegie Hall twice during the Christmas season.
Recent seasons have included a national concert tour, as well as performing with Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer, Charlotte Church, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a critically acclaimed 15-city tour entitled "A Royal Christmas." SABBATICAL PLANNING STILL ON TRACK FOR 2007
A grant request is being prepared for the Eli Lilly Foundation in hopes that funding for both clergy and congregational renewal can be provided.
PROGRAM RATIONALE AND DESIGN
Just as the human body and soul needs time for renewal to engage in activities that promote spiritual health and physical well-being, so does the church body. The St. Andrew's renewal program will provide an opportunity for both the pastor and the congregation to focus on spiritual and physical health. We will relight the candle of enthusiasm for God and worship that has been dimmed by our recent need to focus on facilities in response to rapid growth. What gain have the workers from their toil? I have seen the business that God has given to everyone to be busy with. He has made everything suitable for its time; moreover he has put a sense of past and future into their minds, yet they cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. I know that there is nothing better for them than to be happy and enjoy themselves as long as they live; moreover, it is God's gift that all should eat and drink and take pleasure in all their toil. I know that whatever God does endures forever; nothing can be added to it, nor anything taken from it; God has done this, so that all should stand in awe before him. (Ecclesiastes 3:9-14)
DOROTHY NEIGHBORS
We the daughters of Dorothy Neighbors. We would like this note included in next month's "Tidings" our message of gratitude to the many members who have so kindly and lovingly visited her, sent notes of encouragement, remembered her on her birthday and prayed for her. She misses her St. Andrew's family so much especially during the Easter season and wants them all to know how very dear their thoughts and prayers are to her during this time of healing and recovery. She is truly blessed to have so many thoughtful and close friends. She is in Britthaven for rehab and is working with every fiber of her body and soul to become stronger. Thank you again from Jennifer, Sallie and Peggy.
