PARSON'S PARAGRAPH
Do you believe in miracles? From the Latin, miraculum, meaning 'to wonder at' or 'wonderful', I think of Mary's wonder: from that first Christmas through that first Easter. Both, full of human emotion and divine intervention.

Our experience of Church is like that. Miraculous things are afoot (or 'awing') all around us!   Such was the 'aha' moment for me recently at a Brotherhood of St. Andrew breakfast when the giving of God's abundant love ('charis' from which comes the word 'charity') and the response of the recipient who gives thanks ('eucharist' from which comes the word 'thanksgiving') were put into perspective.

He who gives seed to the sower and bread for food will give and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness.  You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us;  for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints but also overflows with many thanksgivings to God.
2 Cor 9:10-12 (NRSV)

I heard a visitor marvel with wonder recently as they were shown our new church environs, "God has blessed these people!"

May every work of faith be a hearty response of our thanksgiving in this fall season!

Faithfully yours,
Charles+ [BACK TO TOP]

MONTHLY MESSAGE FROM THE FINANCE COMMITTEE
Fall has arrived and with it the final quarter of 2006! The Finance Committee has begun looking towards the end of the year and planning for 2007. A comparison of Revenues for the periods ended August 31, 2006 and August 2005 are as follows:

                             August 2006                                August 2005

Plate                      $59,914                                       $48,069
Pledge                    $208,311                                    $258,576
Other                      $9,610                                      $26,711

TOTALS                   $277,835                                    $333,356

In reviewing these comparisons, note that income is $55,521 less than last year at this time.   With a total budget of just over $397,000 that is driven by maintaining operational expenses, there is significant income that needs to be realized over the next few months. As contributors to St. Andrews, we ask you to fulfill your pledge as soon as possible. If you need any of your individual pledge information, please call Joy Kupetz in the church office at 441-5382.

NEW LAW EFFECTING CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS
On August 17 the President signed into law the "Pension Protection Act of 2006." This law allows certain tax-free distributions of up to $100,000 from some IRA accounts. The distribution must be one that would have been taxable and must be made by taxpayers who are at least 70 ½ years of age.   The contribution must be paid directly from the IRA trustee directly to the charitable organization. This law is for contributions made between now and December 31, 2007.

If you think this new law would benefit you in your pledge to St. Andrew's please consult with your tax professional or contact Skipper Hines, the Church Treasurer. [BACK TO TOP]

SUNDAY SCHOOL HAS BEGUN!
Teachers, your commitment and enthusiasm for your ministry for our kids are a wonder to behold. I can tell that both the children and their parents are grateful for your work. A special thanks today to Wendy Kelly (our amazing craft), Annah Petty (her organizational skill and popcorn machine), Amy Montgomery (manning the popcorn machine) and Lisa Guiterrez (leading our singing) for their special additions to our first day of Sunday School.

Claiborne Yarbrough, assisted by Donna Trivette are our Sunday School coordinators this year. Jay Tutwiler continues faithfully setting up and watching over Sunday events as superintendent.

Added this year are CD players and music relating to the lessons. The curriculum provides a lot of flexibility for each teacher in presenting the lesson, including music, art, movement and faith skills activities. It will be wonderful for all of our children to be learning the same thing each Sunday .

A blessed addition is that of the Children Choir. Every child and parent will be blessed!

Sunday School is held at 10:15 AM every Sunday morning. Come to the 9:30 Family Service as the children will receive a blessing as they are sent to their classes.

Find out more by contacting Claiborne Yarbrough at yarbrough4@hotmail.com or by calling the church. [BACK TO TOP]

SUNDAY SCHOOL HAS BEGUN FOR ADULTS, TOO!
A down-to-earth learning curve has begun for the adult Sunday School class. "Christianity for Dummies" is an engaging class for adults (especially suited for those who wonder why we say and do what we say and do as Christians). We aim to help each adult find meaning and fresh purpose in the journey of life as a Christian.

Adult Sunday School meets at the same time our children do. Adults meet in St. Andrew's Hall (east end). Steve Sawin, Grace Wood and Claiborne Yarbrough have put together a wonderful class not to be missed! Steve Slaughter will begin offering an evening in-depth study for adults who want to continue the Sunday morning experience on Wednesdays at 7 PM at St. Andrew's. [BACK TO TOP]

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY
"Wrapped in love and prayer" is the way one person described her gift of a Payer Shawl. Members of St. Andrew's meet every Monday morning and enjoy the parlor, beginning with prayer and continue their fellowship with good conversation.

Each shawl is blessed by our Prayer Shawl Ministry Team and a card is attached. The shawls are intended as a witness of our prayers and God's love and may be given to those whose lives are touched by significant events, such as giving birth, facing an illness, etc.

The first of the Prayer Shawls were blessed at the Wednesday Holy Eucharist & Healing on September 20 th. These shawls were then displayed in the narthex on Sunday, September 24 th as the Bishop visited.   If you would like more information, please be in touch with Karen Sawin.

The Prayer Shawl Blessing:
God's grace be upon this shawl:
Warming, comforting, enfolding and embracing
May this mantle be a safe haven:
A witness to the sacred touch of God's secure love and our well-being
Sustaining and embracing in good times as well as in difficult ones.
May the one who receives this shawl:
Be cradled in hope, kept in joy, graced with peace and wrapped in love.
Blessed be the bearer of this gift!

RESPITE CARE
The Prayer Shawl Ministry Team enjoyed hearing from Renate Macchirole, Dare Respite Care Program Coordinator, in September. Their ministry with Prayer Shawls fit well into the vision of 'caring for caregivers'. The demands of care giving by family members for special needs can stretch a care giver's physical and emotional health. [BACK TO TOP]

Respite Care is forming in Dare County with the hope of training volunteers to go into a home on an as-needed basis, allowing the care giver to go to necessary appointments, or just to take a break.   It is not assisted care, but rather the offering of one's presence for the peace of mind needed in knowing that someone is present should the care giver or others need to be contacted. For more information, contact Renate at 475-5057.

NEED FOR FOSTER/ADOPTIVE PARENTS IN DARE COUNY
The theme "Children Belong in Families" is heard in Dare County as there is an urgent need for temporary or permanent homes for a child (children) in our county. If you are interested in knowing more, please contact Susan Nelson of the Dare County Department of Social Services at 252-472-5500.

BIBLE STUDY ON MONDAYS

HYMNS OF FAITH
We sing our theology, our beliefs. Come and find out more about the hymns we sing: who wrote them and why; what was the scenario that brought the music and words together and how we hear and understand our faith in these wonderful hymns today. We meet just after the 10 AM Wednesday Eucharist in Classroom A from about 10:40-11 AM. [BACK TO TOP]

VISION COMMITTEE
The beginning of the year, our vestry formed the Vision Committee to look into planning for the future spiritual needs of the parish for the next 5 years. This committee, a diverse group of 11 parishioners (from youth to adult), has been meeting bi-monthly to gather information and prepare for getting input and feedback from the congregation. The Vision Committee, with the help of Neighbors in Christ groups, is scheduling small "Gatherings" in September and October in the homes of parishioners. Each of you will be invited to attend one of these Gatherings and share your thoughts and ideas about what you think is important for the future of St. Andrew's. Several of the topics for discussion for the Gatherings include:

What are our strengths?
What could we do better?
What are our opportunities?

Your input is vital; the most important part of what will be the culmination of the

Vision Committee's charge. Your input, suggestions and feedback at your Gathering will be summarized in a report to the Vestry at their November and December meetings. [BACK TO TOP]

We need to hear from each and every one of you. This is your opportunity to be HEARD and have an impact on the future direction of St. Andrew's. The Vestry recognizes and is committed to meeting YOUR needs. Be prepared to accept your invitation to attend a gathering in your neighborhood. The gatherings will be limited to no more than 12 attendees to allow everyone an opportunity to participate. Two larger gatherings will be held in the Church. Members of the Vision Committee will facilitate each Gathering. Don't miss out on your chance to be included in planning and preparing for the future of St. Andrew's.
